Tom McCollum Architecture is an architecture firm in Oakland, CA. Trained at UC Berkeley and Harvard University and with more than 20 years of experience in all types and sizes of project –residential and commercial, remodels, additions and office interiors – the work is characterized by thoughtful design that balances the needs of the client and the place.

Like any good story, architecture is a journey. Rather than embarking on this journey with preconceived notions, each project is an exploration of the narrative with the kind of openness that makes possible the thrill of discovery.

Your environment should fit your needs.

In both commercial and residential work, you have goals and ideas. The firm is eager to work with you and to help your ideas materialize; to let your ephemeral feelings coalesce into a tangible and exciting reality. The nuances and idiosyncrasies in every project are opportunities.

Collaboration is the foundation for success. The final product is best achieved when it is the outcropping of a vision shared by the architect and the client.

Navigating the journey, commercial or residential.

Commercial projects often require an efficient and streamlined process. While maintaining the nimbleness and flexibility to consider the client’s needs, Tom McCollum Architecture meets timelines and project goals. You, the client, will be at ease as our expertise will guide your project through the complicated building code, permit and design layout process, essential to the success of  your commercial project.

Residential projects may require multiple iterations and design options before solidifying into the right design. This is a time to dream, build that deck, outdoor space or dream vacation home. Consequently, a personal attentiveness and openness to ideas is a necessary part of the process. The path usually meanders before arriving at a design that doesn’t simply meet your goals – it exceeds them in unexpected ways.

Each project provides opportunities for innovation. Whether it’s the forgotten area below the stairs or voids between walls, projects presents unique opportunities for exploration and discovery. We become consumed in the projects; continually seeking to extract greatness and develop them further.
